Founded 40 years ago, the “I Have A Dream” Foundation (IHDF) is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower children from under-resourced communities to succeed in school, college, and career by providing academic, social, and emotional support from elementary school through college, along with a guaranteed post-secondary scholarship. Our dream is a world where every child has equal access to the educational and career opportunities that will ignite their innate potential.

Position location 

Position can be performed remotely and/or at the national headquarters in New York City. Some domestic travel required for site visits, including some evenings and weekends. If the candidate is located in NYC, he/she would be asked to come to the office periodically. However, this position can be filled by someone living outside NYC.

Compensation & Benefits (FLSA Status: Exempt) 

IHDF offers a competitive salary based on the organization’s compensation philosophy, which is grounded in market data. The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000 depending on qualifications. We also offer comprehensive benefits (medical and dental insurance) and top of the market paid time off (vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays).

Position Summary 

Manage the activities of the National Inspire the Dream Mentoring Program committed to the advancement of quality mentoring programs for youth across the Affiliate Network. Responsible for developing the training and technical assistance element and scheduling and delivering training sessions. Respond to requests for consultation and technical assistance, update curriculum and materials as needed, develop evaluation processes for the training calendar and work with the Chief Program Officer to identify local trends in mentoring.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

● Work with the Chief Program Officer, and other program staff in refining the quality, quantity, efficiency and effectiveness of the organization’s work. Develop the training and technical assistance element for the Inspire the Dream Mentoring Program’s comprehensive strategic plan.

● Create a multi-year Professional Development Institute for mentoring program staff. Asses ongoing training needs of Affiliate members, to customize and develop training sessions. Identify and recruit qualified trainers from diverse backgrounds and skill sets as needed. Establish a train-the-trainer orientation process. Implement and manage an evaluation process for all facets of mentor training.

● Respond to requests for mentoring program consultation and technical assistance.

● Develop partnerships and resources to help Affiliates recruit and screen mentors. Create recruitment materials and marketing materials for Affiliates to use on social media channels and to have available at recruitment events.

● Collaborate with the National Alumni Director to contact recent “I Have A Dream” program graduates to determine their interest in becoming a peer mentor.

● Train Affiliate Mentor Managers and Program Staff on use of established Bully-Proofing curriculum.

● Update mentoring curriculum as needed to reflect trends in the field and needs of mentors and mentoring programs. Manage development of new curriculum. Assist in design and development of training manuals and written curriculum. Develop and engage design teams as needed when developing or revising curriculum.

● Facilitate and schedule monthly Network-wide Inspire the Dream Mentoring Program collaboratory meetings with Affiliate Mentoring Volunteer Managers.

● Write quarterly digital mentoring newsletter to be shared with Volunteer Managers and Mentors.

● Work with existing community partnerships and create new partnerships to support mentor program goals.

● Develop the IHDF mentoring program toolkit to support best practices and scaling to new affiliates.

● Maintain appropriate inventory in a Mentoring Resource Library.

● Work closely with evaluation consultants to design and create evaluation tools. Collect all evaluation data from affiliate mentees, mentors and parents. Review evaluation data to improve the program with ALC leadership and mentor collaboratory.

● Manage all aspects of Inspire the Dream Mentoring Program grant award, including implementation and reporting. Coordinate with external Finance Team to ensure financial reporting is done accurately and timely.

● Attend mentoring grantee meetings, as required by OJJDP.

● Perform other duties as opportunities are presented and/or assigned.


● A desire to support the mission and vision of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation.

● Ability to provide superior customer service to Affiliates, partner agencies, volunteers, staff and community members.

● Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, implementing and completing projects within stated timelines.

● Demonstrate initiative in following through independently with projects and tasks.

● Demonstrate support of organizational objectives/initiatives, assisting as needed.

● Demonstrate creative problem solving.

● Experience managing large and/or federal grants is a plus.

● A minimum of three years experience in program development, in a management capacity.

● Background working with volunteers, ideally with mentors.

● Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or Social Science a plus.
