Arvian Harper (she/her)

Sims-Fayola Foundation Chief Operating Officer

I'm all about soaking up knowledge, and I've been diving into the world of education for over 15 years. Yep, I'm that person who loves to learn and help others do the same. As a servant leader and a change agent, I'm all about shaking things up to build systems that work for everyone. Let's challenge the norm, right?

Here's a fun twist: I'm not just your education enthusiast. I'm also a certified yoga instructor and a mindfulness-based stress reduction leader. Mental wellness is my jam! When I'm not wearing my educator or mindfulness hat, you'll find me chilling with my high school sweetheart-turned-hubby. We've got two amazing kiddos and a whole bunch of pets keeping our lives interesting.

Life's a journey, and I'm here to make sure it's a good one, especially for students of color who often get the short end of the stick in our education system. Let's make a positive impact together!

Markell Lucas (he/him)

Sims-Fayola Foundation Director of Professional Learning

I'm originally from Detroit, Michigan, and I've spent some time living in Flint too, which has had a big impact on who I am. Detroit, though, holds a special place in my heart - it's like my home base, and Flint played a significant role in shaping who I've become.

In my free time, you'll catch me playing a lot of basketball and keeping up with sports on TV. I'm also into staying fit and diving into some good books. I really dig reads that focus on self-improvement and education.

I'm super dedicated to the meaningful work happening at Sims-Fayola. Our mission is all about changing up how society sees young men of color, and that mission really fires up my passion for the impactful work we're doing.

Vizier LuQman (he/him)

Sims-Fayola Foundation Community and Corporate Partnerships Manager

Born and raised in the vibrant Five Points of Denver, I'm all about that rich Black culture shaping who I am.

For the past 10 years, I've been all in, serving and advocating for at-promise youth. It's my thing – creating environments that enrich and empower our young minds. Now, besides my gig at Sims Fayola, you'll catch me either coaching or hitting the basketball court myself. Oh, and managing my baby – the Place of Peace Cancer Foundation. And let's not forget, I'm a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Fun fact – got myself an honorary doctorate in Metaphysics, diving deep into spirituality, divinity, and positive thinking. Yeah, I've done some seriously focused research on that front. My mission? To make a splash of peace and positivity in this world, especially when it comes to uplifting the next generation of young Black Kings and Queens. Ase!

Katie Garcia Martinez (she/her)

The Buddy Program Mentoring Program Coordinator

Hi everyone! My name is Katie Garcia and I am a Mentoring Program Coordinator with the Buddy Program. I am coming up on three years with the organization and I couldn’t be more grateful for the work I’ve been able to do, and the wonderful youth I have met along the way. I grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley, and while I love the beautiful mountains that surround me I have never forgotten my family’s culture. My parents immigrated to the U.S. in the late 80’s, and while they built a life for themselves here, they never forgot their homeland. I was raised to speak both English and Spanish fluently, and I am so grateful I can speak to family and my community in our shared language.
I graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder back in 2021 with two Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science Ethnic Studies. My passion for supporting my people is what inspired me to return to the community I was born and raised in and support the next generation through the Buddy Program. My passion for social justice work has inspired me to embrace all facets of my identity. I consider myself a late bloomer, since I didn’t fully accept I was queer until last year. It’s been the most liberating experience to not only come out to people I was closest to, but to cherish this part of who I am. I hope to inspire others to do the same.

Bri Sanchez (she/her)

The Buddy Program Mentoring Program Coordinator

Howdy everyone! My name is Bri and I’m a Denver native who grew up in El Paso, Texas. I moved back to the Denver metro area to finish high school and after many years of juggling work and school- I graduated with a BA in Sociology from the University of Colorado Denver. In 2020, I made my way to the beautiful Roaring Fork Valley and got my start working in non-profits during the summer of 2021. It’s been a passion of mine ever since. I now work as a Mentoring Program Coordinator for The Buddy Program. There are parts of my life that motivate me daily to utilize my voice to advocate with others who have faced oppression and/or marginalization in the same ways I have. I’m a woman, I’m from the Latin community, I grew up in a low socioeconomic status household, I’m part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and I have faced different forms of trauma. There are also parts of my life that motivate me to utilize my privilege to uplift the voices of others who have not been historically heard. I am cisgendered, my first language is English, I live in a country that is congruent to my citizenship, and I do not have any diverse abilities. It’s also important to mention that there are people within my life that ignite my passion to further my allyship within different communities, those being: migrant communities and the diverse ability community.

Aspen Chin (she/her)

The Lounge, Executive Director

I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, and have experienced firsthand both the amazing things and the struggles of my city. I graduated from Overland High School, where I discovered my passion for serving and creating a space for others to be the best version of themselves. Unfortunately, this passion was ignited by a troubling experience I had with my AVID teacher. On the verge of my senior year, she looked me in the eye and asked, "What will happen to me? What happens if CU Denver rescinds my offer letter?" During my junior and senior years, I struggled greatly with my mental health and, like many young people, had few resources to even recognize that I needed help. My grades, social life, and relationships suffered as I navigated through my mental health challenges. From the last day of my senior year, I made a vow to never let anyone else experience what I went through. Young people deserve help, and adults are often the ones we turn to for that support.

Curtis Hearst (he/him)

Partners of Delta, Montrose & Ouray Executive Director

Curtis joined Partners Mentoring in 2013 as a case manager. In 2015, he was unexpectedly asked to take on the leadership role of Executive Director. As a young executive director, Curtis sought mentorship from directors of other Partners Mentoring Association programs. After several years of ‘fake-it-‘til-you-make-it’ management, Curtis has grown the organization to a staff of 11 and significantly increased financial resources dedicated to program support. As a director of a small organization in a rural community, Curtis is heavily involved with day-to-day programming as well as grant writing and administrative duties.

Curtis’s Colorado journey began in 2003 as he attended Western State College in Gunnison. While working as a fishing guide for several summers he continued his education earning a master’s in Communication and Public Relations. His writing skills, along with community connections, grew working as a news reporter and photographer in his current hometown, Montrose. He enjoys spending ample time outside with program youth, his wife Leah and two sons’ Bode and Garrett.
